Club Agathos restaurant.

On the residence’s private beach, Bernard and Françoise welcome you to Club Agathos in the shade of the terrace or in the sun on the edge of the sea, with the same warmth and with very moderate prices.

The menu is rich with provençal and mediterranean flavours thanks to the freshness of their produce.

House specialities include grilled bass (16€), grilled sardines (16 €), provençal mussels (12 €), filet of mullet with pesto or anchovy butter (14 €) and andouillette (tripe sausage) served hot, from haut Var (22 €),... You also find salads starting at 6€, pan bagnat (a sandwich speciality from Nice), panini (grilled sandwiches) and croque monsieur (toasted ham and cheese), as well as cold sandwiches and ice-cream from the snack menu.

You can choose from a long list of typical Provençal and French Riviera dishes if you order 48 hours in advance, according to the number of people eating...

Opening times: 10am to 7pm for snacks ; 12am to 3pm for the restaurant.

Private beach: 10€ for half a day (4 hours), 14€ for the day (10am to 7pm).

Family time in Agathos

Résidence Agathos is a place which is particularly suited to families.

Children are welcome and everything is done to ensure the parents’ piece of mind.

- a central grassy area for children to run around,

- access to the sea is fenced off,

- children can get to different activities by themselves along the sea front,

- the beach is very quiet and the sea is calm. In Agay harbour, the wind always blows towards the beach, so there is no danger of drifting.

Everthing is accessible on foot from the residence. Once the car is parked in the car park, you can forget about it during your stay.

The History of the place

Agay, known as the ruby of the Côte d’Azur, is a closed natural harbour, an ancient volcano from the Esterel massif. This natural port, one of the best mooring places in the Mediterranean, had already been praised by the Greeks who called it Agathon which means good and favourable.

The Romans turned it into a trading post on a branch road of the Via Aurelia ; then the seigniory, called Agaï in provençal language and Agay in french was taken over by the Bishops of Fréjus in the middle ages.

The first village was created in 1636 around a château built on the orders of Richelieu to defend the coast of Provence by Jean-Vincent de Roux to whom the Bishops of Fréjus had given the land. It was destroyed by the occupying army in may 1944, with only the lower parts of the old ramparts remaining at the end of the beach.

Agay’s development and the creation of a seaside resort is linked to the arrival of the railway line in 1864 and to the first tourists between two very well known high society resorts, Cannes and Saint-Raphaël. Agay is alot quieter and welcomes writers and painters such as Alphonse Karr, Guy de Maupassant, Jean Aicard, Maurice Donnay, Guillaumin and Valtat.

This is the period of the winter season, of tourists coming here for the Côte d’Azur’s sunny climat and exceptional light, for the flowering mimosas and the carnivals.

After the first world war, summer tourism develops, due to sea bathing, and sees the opening of l’hôtel de La Baumette, one of the most elegant of the côte d’Azur. Many of the world’s famous writers and stars stay here.

The second world war sees part of the village disappear as well as the chateau, but a new tourist boom sets in linked to the quality of the environment and the quiet family life that Agay offers. At the heart of this exceptional place, Agathos brings to you at all times of the year the benefit of it’s climate, it’s vegetation and its closeness to the sea.

The Esterel

The Esterel massif is one of the biggest european massifs of the palaeozoic era : Its jagged landscape and its large variety of colours bears witness to its volcanic past. Spread over 97000 hectares, of which 14000 are listed in the Var and The Alpes Maritimes departements (or counties), it is dominated by Mont Vinaigre (Vinegar Mountain), up to 614 m high.

From car parks 3km out of Agathos, a network of footpaths and tracks, which are regularly maintained by the national forestry department, allow walkers and cyclists to explore the area all year round. The massif is the French Riviera’s green lung ; It serves as a natural refuge for animals : wild boar, stags, deer, small mammals, reptiles... and exceptional flora throughout the year, mimosas, orchids, rockroses, eucalyptus, giant euphorbias, bay-trees, valley roses, etc.

With Natura Bike, Yoann Cenni offers both discovery and athletic mountain bike rides in the Esterel massif which last between two and a half and three hours; bike, helmet, water and supervision included: 27€ per person or 12€ with your own bike.

Yoann Cenni also organizes half-day hikes with a minimum of 5 participants at 12€ per person.

In total harmony with nature, he allows you to discover wild areas which are rarely visited (lac de l’écureuil or squirrel lake and back via a ravine called le ravin de Malinfernet).

During breaks he’ll talk about the flora and fauna as well as the history and legends of the Esterel.

Agay hosts a number of different festivals, celebrations and fairs throughout the year ; The mimosa festival, the pilgrimage and Saint-Honorat’s day in may, Agay festival in july, the fishing festival, the provençal jousting tounament, regattas and petanque (or boules) competitions.
