In the Baie d'Agay (Saint-Raphaël district, Var) in the heart of the Côte d'Azur (French Riviera), Résidence Agathos is situated with its feet in the water of Mediterranean on a private beach and in a park with maritime and provencal flora. It's 20 provencal bastidons (cottages) were created in the old orchard on Chateau d'Agay's estate which has been owned by the same family for nearly four hundred years. They are available for rent at any time of the year for a weekend, a week, a month...

Surrounded by the red rocks of the Esterel which dominate the bay’s landscape, Residence Agathos has the benefit of a preserved environment with a calm family atmosphere.

Accomodations in the Bastidons

In a semicircle facing the beach and the Mediterranean sea, around a grassy esplanade, surrounded by flowers, palm trees and umbrella pines, the bastidons are arranged to ensure that privacy is preserved.

La bastide in Provence is a country house and le bastidon is therefore a small provençal house or cottage. They are independant and separated from one another by greenery and flowers. Facing the sea, each with a different view, the bastidons have a terrace protected by a canopy of roman roof tiles which creates shade in the summer and shelter in the winter.

Each bastidon is equipped with an entry hall, a lounge with a corner kitchen and bedding for two, a double room, a bathroom with a bath and a separate toilet.

 Weekend or Midweek  : According to vacancies, you may stay for less than a week.

Linen rental : Prices for one week rental. For the following weeks, there is 50% discount if you keep the same linen. 5% discount on new rental.

Sale's conditions 2013

These conditions apply to all sales of stays at the residence Agathos, unless a specific written contract is signed. Please, keep this document.

The price for stay includes :

- Rental of a 28 m2 furnished cottage, with equipment for 4 persons,

including water and electricity.

- One parking place inside the residence.

- Direct access to the public beach.

- The use of the residence private beach

- Access to free services from the reception .

- Possibility for receiving telephone calls directly into the cottage. The use of a television set with satellite channels.

The price does not include :

- Telephone calls outside the residence.

- The visitor’s tax (see detail below).

- The cottage must be left clean. If is not, you will be charged 50€.

- Linen rental (sheets, towels etc).

- Cleaning during your stay.

- Insurance of lodgers during their stay.

- WIFI connexion.

Insurance : You must check with your insurance company if you are covered while being in a cottage of our residence, and if you are covered in case of cancellation of your stay (see booking conditions below) .

Visitor’s tax : It is paid to the residence and given back to Saint-Raphaël city hall.

the price is 0.80 € per day, per person over 13 years old.

Departure and arrival

Stays run from Saturday until Saturday (except short time stays or extended stays)

Cottages are available on Saturday or on the appointed arrival day, from 4 pm.

Cottages must be free on departure day before 10 am.

The parking space must be free on departure day before 4 pm.

Any derogation to these rules must be approved by the management.Do contact us plan your arrival and departure according to the reception openings hours and your schedule.

Deposit

To have access to the cottages, you must leave a deposit of 200 €uros which will be returned to you at the end of your stay. The deposit will not be cashed. It is used as a guarantee against damages in the cottages or in the residence and used if the responsibility of the lodgers or their guests is recognized.

Use of the premises.

The signer of the booking form and the lodgers must respect the residence rules available in all cottages.

Do care about using collective equipment with no abuse, respect their surroundings and tell the receptionist about any problem and if you have guests.

Animals: Dogs are welcome, provided they are kept on a lead within the residence. TYou must inform the reception when you brig a pet and an additionnal fee of 10€ per stay will be charged. Only one medium size dog is allowed in a cottage.Animals are not allowed on the beach.

Booking conditions.

The booking of a stay and paid services is made when the firm S.G.I AGATHOS receives the booking form mentioning full address and telephone number of the client, dates of stay, amount of cottages and details of services required. At least 25% of the total amount must be sent with the booking form (stay + services)

A booking form is provided with the price list. The residence reception can send you one by mail, e-mail or fax at your request. A confirmation of your booking will be sent to you as soon as we receive your deposit.

You can also book your stay and services by phone .While expecting your fulfilled booking form,( by mail, e-mail or fax) and your deposit, we can reserve your cottage(s) for a length of time varying according to the date of your stay.

Payment can be made with a French bank check to S.G.I AGATHOS , or credit card (VISA, EUROCARD MASTERCARD ) over the phone or by mail (on the booking form ) ,or a credit transfer in Euros to S.G.I AGATHOS /SOCIETE GENERALE (CODE 30003 IBAN FR 76) / AGAY AGENCY (CODE 01917) /ACCOUNT NUMBER 000 2 040227 1/93. WEEK ENDS : The full amount must be paid when the reservation is made ( except for the tourist tax)

Conditions of validity or cancellation for a booked stay.

30 days before the date the stay begins, the deposit becomes a partial payment. Balanced payment is to be paid to S.G.I AGATHOS no later than 30 days before the stay begins.

A confirmation of the payment for the stay will be sent to you in return. In case the balanced payment is not sent to us within the term of payment and after a follow up letter from us, the firm S.G.I AGATHOS has the right to cancel your reservation and keep the deposit.

In case of cancellation between thirty and twenty days before the stay begins, only the deposit of 25% will be kept by the firm S.G.I AGATHOS to compensate for the loss. After, S.G.I AGATHOS will keep the entire amount.

Résidence Agathos offers a range of additional services in order to make your stay pleasant and comfortable.

Service prices are indicated below. They need to be reserved on the general reservation form at the same time as you reserve your stay. They follow the same rules as those of the general reservation.

Linen

Residence Agathos has a linen service, but you may bring your own linen with you. The linen is available at reception and is given back to reception when finished with. From the second week on, if you keep your linen, a 50% reduction is applied to the weekly rate. If you change your linen, you benefit from a 5% reduction.

Club Agathos restaurant.

On the residence’s private beach, Bernard and Françoise welcome you to Club Agathos in the shade of the terrace or in the sun on the edge of the sea, with the same warmth and with very moderate prices.

The menu is rich with provençal and mediterranean flavours thanks to the freshness of their produce.

House specialities include grilled bass (16€), grilled sardines (16 €), provençal mussels (12 €), filet of mullet with pesto or anchovy butter (14 €) and andouillette (tripe sausage) served hot, from haut Var (22 €),... You also find salads starting at 6€, pan bagnat (a sandwich speciality from Nice), panini (grilled sandwiches) and croque monsieur (toasted ham and cheese), as well as cold sandwiches and ice-cream from the snack menu.

You can choose from a long list of typical Provençal and French Riviera dishes if you order 48 hours in advance, according to the number of people eating...

Opening times: 10am to 7pm for snacks ; 12am to 3pm for the restaurant.

Private beach: 10€ for half a day (4 hours), 14€ for the day (10am to 7pm).

Family time in Agathos

Résidence Agathos is a place which is particularly suited to families.

Children are welcome and everything is done to ensure the parents’ piece of mind.

- a central grassy area for children to run around,

- access to the sea is fenced off,

- children can get to different activities by themselves along the sea front,

- the beach is very quiet and the sea is calm. In Agay harbour, the wind always blows towards the beach, so there is no danger of drifting.

Everthing is accessible on foot from the residence. Once the car is parked in the car park, you can forget about it during your stay.

The History of the place

Agay, known as the ruby of the Côte d’Azur, is a closed natural harbour, an ancient volcano from the Esterel massif. This natural port, one of the best mooring places in the Mediterranean, had already been praised by the Greeks who called it Agathon which means good and favourable.

The Romans turned it into a trading post on a branch road of the Via Aurelia ; then the seigniory, called Agaï in provençal language and Agay in french was taken over by the Bishops of Fréjus in the middle ages.

The first village was created in 1636 around a château built on the orders of Richelieu to defend the coast of Provence by Jean-Vincent de Roux to whom the Bishops of Fréjus had given the land. It was destroyed by the occupying army in may 1944, with only the lower parts of the old ramparts remaining at the end of the beach.

Agay’s development and the creation of a seaside resort is linked to the arrival of the railway line in 1864 and to the first tourists between two very well known high society resorts, Cannes and Saint-Raphaël. Agay is alot quieter and welcomes writers and painters such as Alphonse Karr, Guy de Maupassant, Jean Aicard, Maurice Donnay, Guillaumin and Valtat.

This is the period of the winter season, of tourists coming here for the Côte d’Azur’s sunny climat and exceptional light, for the flowering mimosas and the carnivals.

After the first world war, summer tourism develops, due to sea bathing, and sees the opening of l’hôtel de La Baumette, one of the most elegant of the côte d’Azur. Many of the world’s famous writers and stars stay here.

The second world war sees part of the village disappear as well as the chateau, but a new tourist boom sets in linked to the quality of the environment and the quiet family life that Agay offers. At the heart of this exceptional place, Agathos brings to you at all times of the year the benefit of it’s climate, it’s vegetation and its closeness to the sea.

The Esterel

The Esterel massif is one of the biggest european massifs of the palaeozoic era : Its jagged landscape and its large variety of colours bears witness to its volcanic past. Spread over 97000 hectares, of which 14000 are listed in the Var and The Alpes Maritimes departements (or counties), it is dominated by Mont Vinaigre (Vinegar Mountain), up to 614 m high.

From car parks 3km out of Agathos, a network of footpaths and tracks, which are regularly maintained by the national forestry department, allow walkers and cyclists to explore the area all year round. The massif is the French Riviera’s green lung ; It serves as a natural refuge for animals : wild boar, stags, deer, small mammals, reptiles... and exceptional flora throughout the year, mimosas, orchids, rockroses, eucalyptus, giant euphorbias, bay-trees, valley roses, etc.

With Natura Bike, Yoann Cenni offers both discovery and athletic mountain bike rides in the Esterel massif which last between two and a half and three hours; bike, helmet, water and supervision included: 27€ per person or 12€ with your own bike.

Yoann Cenni also organizes half-day hikes with a minimum of 5 participants at 12€ per person.

In total harmony with nature, he allows you to discover wild areas which are rarely visited (lac de l’écureuil or squirrel lake and back via a ravine called le ravin de Malinfernet).

During breaks he’ll talk about the flora and fauna as well as the history and legends of the Esterel.
